Being away from Instagram has saved me from going off the deep end. It has also shown me how few ways we have to connect with others outside of these hellscapes. I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard spot, and it's really lonely here.
When I left Instagram last year I tried to stay connected to my friends mostly via my website and text. I seem to have failed miserably since I used to feel like I was surrounded by friends in my daily life, to having almost no one to talk to. I miss the barrage of stories updating me with monotonous life events of others. I miss chit chatting in the DMs day and night with people from all over the world. What I don't miss is the nasty attitudes in every comment section, the horrific algorithm, or the anxiety I would feel when someone would pop into my DMs to try to fight with me over a stupid misunderstanding.
I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm not sure how to stay connected with my community without being present on social media. What I do know is I'm not returning to any platforms where I'm not respected. I've found a very small community on Bluesky and will continue to promote Sage & June on that platform. I am also on Xiauhongshu (Rednote) for entertainment purposes and honestly would rather China have my data than META at this point. I kept hoping something would pop off and I would be in a new space with the community I once had but I don't think that is going to happen anymore.
